The Long Slice:

Going through menopause can wreak havoc on a woman’s hormones and lead to unwanted weight gain.

As a woman transitions into this stage of life:

  • Estrogen declines.

  • Progesterone, which is needed for pregnancy and eases anxiety, all but disappears.

  • Thyroid function decreases, slowing her metabolism.

  • Testosterone, needed for strength and keeping fat low, dips.

  • Cortisol, a fat storing hormone, increases.

  • Insulin sensitivity, essential for regulating blood sugar levels, deteriorates.

These hormonal changes can make it possible for a post-menopausal woman to store more body fat - sometime a lot more - especially in her midsection (known as ‘menopause belly’).

This is exactly what happened to my client, Mary.

MARY GAINED 70 LB AFTER MENOPAUSE AND DEVELOPED HEALTH ISSUES

When we first spoke, Mary was 57 years old, worked in finance, and, even though she was thin for most of her life, had gained 70LB while going through menopause.

“I used to be so skinny that people thought I was anorexic. Menopause changed everything.”

The combination of menopause-driven hormonal changes, increasing demands at work, and the stress of caring for her aging mom, created what she calls a ‘perfect storm’ of weight gain.

“I just ‘ballooned out’, and developed this menopause belly.”

This led to health issues, including elevated blood sugar / A1C levels, a pre-diabetes diagnosis, and the upsurge in cholesterol that usually comes with it.

Mary told me that before menopause, her total cholesterol was 106. Now, it had climbed to 250.

THE weight gain TOOK A TOLL ON BOTH HER ENERGY AND HER SELF-ESTEEM

Basic daily tasks she used to do with ease, like climbing a flight of stairs with a package, now caused her to lose her breath.

She felt ‘heavy’ in her body.

Even worse, it took a toll on her self-esteem.

Feeling self-conscious on Zoom calls (‘Is my triple chin showing?’) and being embarrassed when taking photos (‘I look like my [obese] Aunt Louise’) became the norm.

THE THINGS SHE TRIED TO LOSE THE WEIGHT DID NOT LEAD TO A LONG-TERM RESULT

When the weight started coming on, Mary tried several things to get the weight down, including a weight loss nutrition app (Noom), experimenting with intermittent fasting (it didn’t really work for her), and going to a personal trainer (it didn’t last).

Unfortunately, none of these resulted in a long-term solution, leaving Mary confused on what else to do.

After all the hormonal changes she had been through, she didn’t know how to get the weight down, and felt stuck.

She wondered, “How do I even fix this at my age?

MARY WAS STRUGGLING TO GET MOTIVATED AND FEARED A BLEAK FUTURE

To make matters worse, Mary was struggling to get motivated to even get on some kind of routine.

“I don’t have a motivated mindset right now, and I don’t have the impetus to get over the inertia,” she admitted to me.

Mary was concerned that if she didn’t change, she would face serious health challenges in the future, including reduced mobility, developing Type 2 Diabetes, or having a heart attack or stroke.

She would also begin to feel ‘miserable’ because of how unhappy she’d be about how she looks, and distraught at the possibility of living a life that was limited by her weight vs. having the freedom to bike, hike, and fully enjoy her retirement years.

More than anything, she didn’t want to fail at this because it could create a situation where she felt discouraged and despondent about life.

She was eager to fix this situation for good.

I know I can do this. I just need some help,” she confided. “I’m ready to learn.”

THESE FOUR STEPS HELPED MARY LOSE THE MENOPAUSE WEIGHT AND GET HEALTHY AGAIN

We worked with Mary to help her get unstuck, start losing the weight, and learn the lifestyle and science-based strategies that will keep the weight off.
